Course Description
本課程先複習熱力學三大定律及各種熱力學函數,例如熱容量,entropy,焓及自由能等,從統計熱力學解釋entropy之微觀意義;熱力學函數的基本數學;介紹熱力學之平衡觀念及單元系統的相轉變o再討論氣體的混合,討論理想與真實溶液之性質,雙元相圖與自由能之關係,化學反應之平衡觀念,特別以固態材料系統為對象,探討其化學反應及相轉變所需考量之熱力學觀念。
This course will review the three laws of thermodynamics and thermodynamic functions, such as heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy, free energy. And we will explain the microscopic meaning of entropy by statistical thermodynamics, the basic mathematics for derivation of some important thermodynamic equations, the concepts of thermodynamic equilibrium for the phase transition of unary system.Thermodynamics of gas phase mixing, properties of ideal and real solutions of condensed matter, the relationship between binary phase diagram and Gibbs free energy curves, and the concepts of reaction equilibrium will be explained.Thermodynamic concepts for phase transitionsand chemicalreaction are discussed.

Course Description
This is a two consecutive semesters course. There are five major parts of subjects to be introduced in this course. The subjects of the first part are about the household. We will focus on individual consumer's decision making with and without uncertainty. In the second part, we will focus on the decision making at the level of individual firm. Given the technological opportunities available to it, how much output will a firm choose to see, and how will the firm go about producing this output? In the third part, the competitive model will be introduced. We will see a competitive market produces results that are in some sense "good". In the fourth, we will see different kinds of market structures. The price and output decisions under different market structrue will be analyzed and compared with those under perfect competition. In the last part, the problem of missing market will be discussed. In the presence of asymmetric information, the markets for certain commodities may not come into existence. Even if markets exist, they may fail to allocate resources efficiently.

General Information
This course is to introduce the basic concepts on electromagnetics, covering topics of transmission line, electrostatics, magnetostatics, time-varying field, plane waves etc. To be consistent with the modern trend of electrical engineering, I bring forward the transmission line to the beginning of the lecture. The content of transmission line is mostly adopted from the textbook by Ulaby. However, the same concepts are also given in the textbook by Cheng. This course will be lectured mostly in English and slightly in Chinese for clarity.

認知神經科學(Cognitive Neuroscience )是一門新興的研究領域,主要是探索腦與心智(Brain and Mind)的關連性。從感覺與知覺(Sensation and Perception)、學習與記憶(Learning and Memory)、注意力與情緒(Attention and Emotion)、同理與 厭 惡(Empathy and Disguise)、決策與執行(Decision-making and Execution 、乃至意識(Consciousness)的產生,都是認知神經科學的範疇。 瞭解這些認知行為背後的神經科學不僅是本世紀最重要的一項科學探索,也與每個人的有密切的關係。例如:神經經濟學(Neuroeconomics)與消費者行為及市場調查有關,退化性神經疾病(Neurodegenerative disorders)與老年失智症有關。 在本課程中,我們將依序探討認知神經科學中的主要課題,重點在於介紹最新的研究發展,並討論這些科學發現對個人及社會的衝擊。本課程將以科學人雜誌過去九年所發表有關認知神經科學的文章為主,並以影片及期刊論文為輔,使無心理學或生物學背景的學生亦可學習此一課程。
Cognitive Neuroscience is an emerging academic field concerned with the relation of Brain and Mind. Topics such as: sensation and perception, learning and memory, attention and emotion, empathy and disguise, decision-making and execution, and consciousness, all belong to the field of Cognitive Neuroscience.Understanding the neuroscience behind these cognitive behaviors not only marks one of the most significant science discovery in this century but also deeply connects to individual’s daily life. For example, Neuroeconomics involves in consumer behavior and market research; Neurodegenerative disorders is related to Alzheimer's disease.In this course we’ll introduce some main topics of Neuroscience in order, focusing on the latest research and development, and we’ll discuss the influence on society and individuals from these discoveries. Most of the learning materials come from articles about Cognitive Neuroscience on Scientific American from the last nine years, supplied with films and periodical literature as auxiliaries, so students without psychology or biology background can also participate in this course.

一般來說,教科書最好不要太舊,才能跟上科學進展的腳步。很認真地讀了幾本新的教科書,發現 Kittel and Kroemer 寫的熱物理真是經典,也很對我的胃口。當然這和作者都在美國的加州大學任教無關,尤其與 Kroemer 在風光明媚的 Santa Barbara 教書這件事,特別沒有關係。
Generally, the edition of the textbook should be not too old in order to follow the footsteps of progress in science. After finishing reading some new textbooks, I found that Thermal Physics by Kittel and Kroemer is really classic and suitable for me. Of course it has nothing to do with that the authors teach in UC. And it also absolutely has nothing to do with the fact that Kroemer teaches in wonderful Santa Barbara.

◆ It doesn’t require much background information to learn Thermal and Statistical Physics, if you didn’t pay much attention in class before, it is your chance to start all over. And it is definitely not an easy course because there are so many new concepts. You need much time to understand the concepts and do the assignments at the back of the textbook, or it has slight chance for you to catch up in class.
